ABSTRACT
The applications of demolinguistics have a marked sociopolitical nature. Demolinguistic analyses contribute to knowing a fundamental dimension of populations: that related to the language(s) or variety(ies) with which they communicate. This dimension is clearly appreciated in the fields of administration, justice, and education, and the social and cultural life of a community. Taking the action of demolinguistics to specific spaces, it is possible to observe applications according to the kind of contexts in which the languages are used. Thus, the demolinguistic analysis of indigenous minority languages allows us to know the degree of vitality of the languages. Once the vitality of the languages is known, individually or in the form of atlases or catalogs, it is possible to think of tackling more complex and ambitious objectives: the revitalization of languages or reversal of their decline. In the field of minority languages, the contexts of local languages can be distinguished from those that correspond to the languages of social groups and immigrant languages. Demolinguistics, on the other hand, also finds sense in analyzing the contexts of regional minority languages in which nationalist demands become more intense and conscious. Finally, demolinguistics is a fundamental component of the analysis of the international weight or importance of languages.
