ABSTRACT

Intersectional leadership is a pattern that can be traced through the most seismic social justice movements in history. Intersectionality is what provides the vision for the Global Women’s Funding Movement and is present in everything women’s funds do. The Global Women’s Funding Movement has been able to innovate practices, designed through intersectionality, that are more effective approaches to philanthropy. Trust-based philanthropy is a philanthropic innovation developed by women’s funds. It is the practice of giving philanthropic power to those with experiential knowledge of a problem, believing that those most affected have laser-like solutions and provide fuller strategic visions of justice. This chapter explores stories of the Global Women’s Funding Movement’s efforts to support intersectional leadership including helping establish the Black Feminist Fund.
