ABSTRACT

For decades, Western discourse and politics have been dominated by Max Weber's postulation of a “disenchantment of the world”, compounded by the post-Enlightenment's relegation of religion to the private sphere. Recent years, however, have seen a renewed interest in the role of religion in the making of modern societies. This trend is supported by empirical research that predicts the growth of nearly all major faith traditions in the 21st century (Pew Research Center 2015). In order to better recognise, analyse, and interpret the role of religion, religious literacy is required.
