ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 takes the panoply of problematic responses discussed in the previous chapter and makes the rather obvious point that it is impossible to predict which cases of dementia will result in a gray mist killing. It begins with a historical introduction to the notion of risk. The chapter then identifies the correlates, not causes, of people with dementia killing their spouses or partners. It does the same for cases where caregivers kill people with dementia. This information, taken directly from the case files, is contextualized against the much broader public health literature on risk factors for contracting dementia in later life.
