ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 concerns the role of mercy and exhaustion in 44 gray mist killings, all of which involved men caring for and then killing women. It uses the extant research to highlight the burdens on many of those who care for people with dementia. This information provides important context for introducing mercy and exhaustion as possible rationales for killing. Both pepper the language of the case files, hence their use. The chapter notes their highly subjective nature. These reflections segue to case studies of killings involving mercy and exhaustion as prominent themes. The chapter culminates in a note about undetected caregiver killings.
