ABSTRACT

Encouraging other people to get involved can be a powerful way of increasing impact. Intentionally establishing a cooperative working environment can result in an effective and productive team. Chapter Five, “Cooperating with others”, focuses on how a diverse group of people can have a synergistic effect and make work less demanding. Problems become surmountable when a team harnesses a wide range of skills and takes time to celebrate wins and share joyous moments. Social psychology has a rich evidence base for supporting effective teamwork and dealing with negative group dynamics. This chapter shares strategies and examples of how to recruit people into the group, create positive group dynamics, build consensus, and deal with conflict. It highlights the interdependence of our networks and the value of finding mutually beneficial situations.
