ABSTRACT

The increasing use of social media by the courts and judicial professionals as a way of engaging with wider society, along with the perils and pitfalls of social media’s entrance into courts, is explored in this chapter. Social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, and X are rapidly being used as tool to engage and educate society about the legal system more broadly, but also with regards to specific trials. This chapter presents an overview of the increasing usage and the implications of this. It also charts the evolution of social media in the judicial sphere before outlining the benefits, challenges, and considerations.
