ABSTRACT

This chapter is devoted to a detailed description of the analytical tools used within this book. First, the three components of fighting power – conceptual, physical and moral – are explained using various military doctrines and formal documents. Then, the core of resilient fighting power is discussed in detail, looking at various interdisciplinary definitions of a more abstract concept of resilience. The main post-Cold War developments in warfare are provided as a wider context for distilling the key themes of modern warfare, which are later on traced across further chapters. These themes are as follows: people, technologies, and political will; the theme of total/comprehensive defence; the place of mass in structuring armed forces and employment of fighting power across domains; cross-domain integration, interoperability and combined arms approach.
