ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the scarcer events in the maritime domain of this war, focusing on the extent that Ukraine’s ground-based defences effectively undermined the Russian control of the sea in the studied time frame. The sinking of the Moskva and the use of unmanned sea vehicles (USVs) are discussed in terms of asymmetry in undermining the firepower of a more numerically superior enemy. The chapter also explains how Ukraine lost most of its naval fleet, while Russia strengthened its numerical presence in the Black Sea. The asymmetry of using the coastal mobile antiship missile complex Neptune to undermine Russian control of the sea is addressed here. The use of sea mines is also discussed. Furthermore, the implications of Russian blockading of seaports for civilian traffic and grain exports are explained here. The section on USVs and unmanned undersea vehicles illustrates the pace of these capabilities in naval warfare.
