ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the establishment of the International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG) in 1994 and developments in the international women and sport movement during its 30 years to 2024. The IWG was formed during a time of greater awareness of gender inequality in sport and the potential benefits of increasing opportunities for women and girls to participate in sport at all levels. The IWG is part of a broader global landscape of organisations and frameworks for women and sport, which creates opportunities and some tensions. In moving its Secretariat and World Conference to a different host country every four years, the IWG has been able to activate the women and sport movement in different parts of the world throughout its history.
