ABSTRACT

The International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG) was established in 1994 and, during its first 30 years, successfully advocated for positive change for women and girls in sport while also navigating emergent new problems. The IWG is grounded in feminist principles and, as such, demonstrates alternative forms of governance, with the benefits and occasional challenges of global collaboration. As the IWG moves forward from its 30th anniversary, there are a number of considerations for future Secretariats to ensure continued action and positive change for gender equality in sport. The evidence presented in this book demonstrates that the work of those involved in the first 30 years of the IWG has made sport a better place for women, and many societies a better place for women’s involvement in sport.
