ABSTRACT

The first quadrennial of the IWG established the pattern of co-Chairs to lead the network. In this term, the co-Chairs were Anita White, who was interviewed for this book, along with Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana, a minister from Namibia, where the second IWG World Conference was to be located. Anita White instigated the conference in 1994, which led to the development of an international strategy, the Brighton Declaration, which was a series of principles for women and sport, and the establishment of the IWG. During these first four years of the IWG, the Secretariat and Members established relationships with other key organisations and contributed to an amendment to a United Nations Declaration to ensure the role of sport and physical activity was considered in the empowerment of women and girls.
