ABSTRACT

The IWG Secretariat, 2002–2006, moved to Asia for the first time to be hosted by Japan. The co-Chair was Etsuko Ogasawara, a former sports coach and academic who gathered support from companies and communities to support the work of the Secretariat and the delivery of the fourth World Conference in Kumamoto. The outcome of the conference was a symbol of Asian characters, which became known as the Kumamoto Commitment to Collaboration to build a network dedicated to women and sport. There was subsequently legislative change in Japan for enhanced gender equity, as well as continued work to collaborate with other organisations globally.
