ABSTRACT

When the IWG Secretariat moved to Finland from 2010 to 2014, this marked 20 years since the establishment of the IWG. They used this to proactively increase the number of signatories to the Brighton Declaration, produced a Progress Report on activities in the international women and sport movement since 1994, and their legacy was an updated international charter titled the Brighton Plus Helsinki 2014 Declaration. The Finnish co-Chair was a government minister, Raija Mattila, who was interviewed for this chapter along with Secretary General Terhi Heinilä. They experienced a number of political challenges during their term of office, but also considerable success in improved relationships, particularly with International Federations, and were instrumental in domestic and European progress on gender equality in sport.
