ABSTRACT

The IWG Secretariat moved to Botswana in 2014 with local co-Chair Ruth Maphorisa working alongside American Carole Oglesby. This chapter presents details of the work during this term based on interviews with Oglesby and the Secretary General Game Mothibi. As with previous Secretariats, the Botswana members had to negotiate complex domestic and international relations with multiple stakeholders who had different, and sometimes conflicting, priorities. An outcome of their Secretariat was the recognition of a national women and sport organisation and for gender to be included in the sports act. Their term culminated with a World Conference in Gaborone in 2018 and their legacy of The Botswana Big 5, which highlighted the need for gender mainstreaming with five priority areas.
