ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the basic assumptions of a Smart City (SC) concept and its evolution from generation 1.0 to 3.0 cities. Reference was also made to the idea of creating Smart Cities according to successive economic helix models: triple, quadruple and quintuple. Then, a critical approach to the concept of an SC was presented, which was an introduction to the description of sustainability as a priority for SC development. The last subchapter reveals the key areas of SC assessment, taking into account sustainable development and contemporary international rankings. This chapter defines the determinants of an SC and specifies its role in improving the quality of life of residents, and thus, it is an introduction to further considerations and research in two key topics regarding smart urban solutions and their sustainability.
