ABSTRACT

In this chapter, stories about and perspectives on physical education are provided through the lens of Shaelyn West. Shaelyn West described life with type 1 diabetes, recalling the time of diagnosis. The author further discussed the meaning of disability in reference to diabetes before sharing stories about growing up, participating in basketball and “gym” class, and being disabled. Shaelyn concluded the chapter with recommendations to empower and accommodated disabled students in schools. Readers will have opportunities to learn from the experiences of the author and will be able to reflect on these experiences as they relate to the readers’ future teaching careers.
