ABSTRACT
Patriarchy is the name given to pervasive systems of social, political, and economic power structured around gender inequality. Power relations within patriarchy are grounded on the primacy of men, and of masculinity, in general, vis-à-vis non-male individuals, and the subsequent submission of the latter to the former. “Patriarchy” is a general and totalising category that encompasses a number of attitudes, practices and norms (both institutional and individual), and beliefs and stratifications that are grounded on the supposed superiority, be it moral, rational, biological, or otherwise, of men.
