ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the territorial dimension of overtourism and the challenges it poses for local tourism destinations. It discusses the phenomenon of overtourism in the context of local tourism destinations as the most affected areas. Using Tenerife as a case study, the chapter identifies the key factors that contribute to the occurrence of overtourism in local destinations, such as the concentration of tourists in specific areas or the growth of vacation homes. A set of overtourism indicators are proposed that can be used to measure the impact of tourism on local destinations such as the ratio of visitors to local population, ratio between vacation homes and resident population or the concentration of geotagged photographs uploaded to social media. By analysing these indicators, the chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the overtourism phenomenon in local destinations, highlighting its social, environmental and economic implications. Finally, the management and governance issues of overtourism in local destinations are discussed, highlighting the need for a collaborative approach between public and private stakeholders.
