ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the debate around participatory governance in tourism. Following a short description of the literature, cases in Amsterdam, Barcelona and Lisbon are used to highlight challenges and opportunities that come with this kind of governance. Finally, pathways towards using participatory governance to stimulate a sustainable visitor economy are provided.
