ABSTRACT
This chapter explores Schein’s research on the theme of the relationship between the individual and the organisation. This research, conducted over several decades, has explored the organisational dynamics of careers and role planning and framed the notion of the internal career. Outstanding in this work is Schein’s construct of the career anchor as a subjective career image or self-concept that individuals develop from reflecting on their experience of their total careers. The chapter describes the eight career anchors and provides directions to practical tools for uncovering a career anchor that can be found in Schein’s books on the subject. The questions for study and reflection at the end of the chapter invite the readers to reflect on how their experience of career dynamics in organisations and their own career anchor.
