ABSTRACT

Vernacular landscapes, originally built in harmony with local environmental conditions, have become increasingly vulnerable due to urbanization, river corrections, coastal reclamation, deforestation, and ongoing development. These interventions have heightened climate risks, such as flooding, rainfall, and landslides, with spatial planning strategies failing to address climate change adaptation not only in the case of Fındıklı, Rize but also in comparative cases. This chapter examines the vulnerability of vernacular landscapes, particularly those at risk from river floods and landslides, exacerbated by climate change and regional interventions. Through archival analysis and georeferencing with ArcGIS, changes in land use are tracked to identify at-risk sites in Fındıklı, Rize. Drawing on comparative cases from other mountainous regions, this study highlights common challenges and adaptation strategies.
