ABSTRACT

This chapter provides practical guidance on acquiring appropriate resources (people, equipment and permissions) to successfully carry out inquiry projects outdoors. Guidance is provided on best practices for partnering with volunteers and for acquiring equipment through partnerships. Because scientific equipment can be expensive, recommendations are provided for collecting data using low-cost or zero-cost methods, including specific items that can be easily purchased or built, as well as tools that can be obtained through use of a smartphone or the human five senses. Best practices and guiding questions around physical and emotional safety are also provided via development of risk management plans that consider both indoor decision-making and outdoor activity implementation.
