ABSTRACT

This chapter provides step-by-step instructions for how to get started with an inquiry project. The chapter begins by discussing strategies and principles dividing students into small inquiry groups, then provides guidance on how to begin exploring a place through a range of sense of place and observational activities. Further guidance is provided on using paper or computer notebooks to support learning outdoors. Two final sections are devoted to best practices for using background information to support learning (as well as its ethical importance for place-based learning) and to teaching strategies for recognizing and building relationships with place.
