ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidance on how to effectively facilitate student learning when they are working in small groups. It provides a conceptual and practical overview of facilitation skills, including questioning strategies and suggested teacher behaviors. It also provides guidance on setting behavioral expectations when outdoors. It offers specific strategies for encouraging positive behavior from individual students. It also offers specific strategies for encouraging positive behavior for groups of students, including using team building activities, reflection activities, team contracts, and check-ins. Lastly, it provides strategies for single teachers to simultaneously manage multiple student groups and to get those groups back on track when they are stuck.
