ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidance on helping student teams identify an inquiry question and then creatively design a study to answer it. Guidance is provided on the processes of generating questions, winnowing, and strengthening, until a strong consensus question has been identified that is place-based, feasible, ethical, and has an unknown answer. Further guidance is provided on designing a descriptive or a hypothesis-testing study related to this question based on selecting an appropriate study design and analysis method/graph type. Strong inference via multiple hypotheses is discussed. Anchor charts are introduced as a method to help students understand the overall flow of an inquiry project, including the critical step of making inferences once data have been collected.
