ABSTRACT
This chapter sets out to charter the foundations and professional practice of AVT. The discussion focuses on the emergence, boom and consolidation of AVT both as an academic discipline and as a professional activity. Emphasis is placed on the role that technologies have played, and a comprehensive analysis is provided of the two umbrella AVT modes, i.e. revoicing and subtitling.
