ABSTRACT
“Toward a Publishing Model to Come” explores the evolving significance of photobooks in the context of Japanese photography and its impact on the broader understanding of the medium. This chapter highlights key exhibitions and the importance of the photobook as a vehicle for expanding the parameters of photography discourse while also leading to the global reception of Japanese photography. The role of print media and magazines has been pivotal in shaping the development of the medium in Japan. This chapter also explores the emergence of independent galleries and their connection to photobook and zine publishing, as well as the utilization of performance as a form of publishing. This chapter concludes by discussing the challenges and possibilities of photobook publishing in a post-digital world, advocating for new platforms and modes of dissemination to support experimental approaches in bookmaking.
