ABSTRACT

Based on different questions, theories, methods, data, and approaches, this book examines various facets of the topic forced migration and sport in depth from a sociological perspective.

Based on this information and its interconnections, the leading question of this book ‘What role does sport play in the context of the “refugee crisis”?’ can be ‘answered’ as follows: over time, sport assumed different roles during the ‘refugee crisis’; this event and the sport system influenced each other profoundly and reciprocally; this relationship echoes and reproduces broader social phenomena of inclusion and exclusion, which are deeply entangled with power. To further specify and illustrate this statement, the next section of this chapter delivers a sociological analysis, which focuses on the role of sport in Europe and during delimited periods of the ‘refugee crisis’. Finally, a reflection on the limitations of the presented enquiry and on future perspectives of research on this social phenomenon is presented.
