ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the “responsible research and innovation” (RRI) movement as one moment in an ongoing if not eternal struggle over adequate modes of governing technoscience. Before the subsequent chapters will zoom in on the details of a particular set of experiences with “RRI,” we zoom out to outline some of the stories and metaphors that have been used to indicate what may be at stake. Is technology a run-away train? Is the scientific endeavour to be likened with a ship with no captain, a ship facing or even creating its abyss?
