ABSTRACT
This chapter details our understanding of responsible research and innovation (RRI) in the context of the governance of technoscience. We do this through developing the notion of “translation” and by bringing it together with literature on RRI and on ecologies of participation. This allows us to pay attention to the collectives, carriers, and mediators that both stabilise and co-emerge with particular translations of responsibility. Throughout this chapter translation thus will be developed as a way to talk more productively about processes of implementation and about the shifts and transformations that occur when abstract ideas are travelling across levels and scales and turn into localised practices.
