ABSTRACT
The concept of responsible research and innovation (RRI) emerged together with a very distinct funding environment: The Science-with-and-for-Society (SwafS) project calls of the broader Horizon 2020 research framework programme of the European Union. This chapter provides an overview of the emergence, stabilisation, and potential decline of RRI both as a policy term and as a concept within academic literature. RRI was a product of a rich academic tradition that engaged in critique of science and technology. As it became a “cross-cutting principle” of Horizon 2020, it experienced a series of translations, notably into a set of policy issues or keys. The concept was further domesticated by an increased emphasis on monitoring and indicators following the Horizon 2020 interim evaluation.
