ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses how progressive moral gains can be sustained. It argues that social institutions function as a socially extended mind that allows human beings to store moral improvements in their external environment. Making progress sustainable requires tackling this institutional side of human cooperation, rather than people’s individual psychological capacities.
