ABSTRACT

The aim of this book is to draw attention to changes in the dynamics and structure of crime in Poland over the last 30 years in the context of ongoing social changes not only in this country but also in other countries in the region. Using primarily the official statistics collected by the Polish Ministry of Justice and Police, we would like to emphasize that, on the one hand, certain trends in recorded crime are almost entirely static, regardless of changing political, social, economic or cultural conditions, while on the other hand, the changing rules of society can significantly affect definition of crime as well as its recording, control, and the legal culture of society. In the book, we present selected sociological and criminological theories concerning the transformation of modern societies towards societies of universal mobility, taking into account the impact of broadly understood social changes on crime. We also describe selected crime statistics along with their shapes and dynamics, pointing to the conditions responsible for the structure of crime in Poland over the last 30 years.
