ABSTRACT
The German legal system is based on civil law. The German Constitution, also known as the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany (Grundgesetz), outlines and safeguards the fundamental human rights of all people. The court system adjudicates matters of public law (Öffentliches Recht), which also comprises criminal law (Strafrecht) and private law (Privatrecht).
