ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we introduce the origins of our project—stemming from interests in the transfer of climate communication to political action-and the background on the geopolitics of forest mapping that will help readers make sense of our project. We introduce our research questions and forecast the structure of the project: a critical humanist analysis of the history of forest mapping through its commodification, capitalization, globalization, and glocalization phases; a desktop analysis of the Global Forest Watch (GFW) platform; interviews with developers and users of GFW; and recommendations for developers and users of these platforms in terms of ways to articulate global and local views of forests without reducing one to the other.
