ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we review alternatives to Google Gaia cosmograms of forests and climate using Tim Ingold’s distinction between global and spherical images. Global alternatives are mainly counter-maps that use various techniques to make it impossible to see everything in one glance (or synoptically). Spherical alternatives are mainly dwellings, which must be experienced from the inside-out and ground-up to be understood. We review arguments by environmental justice (EJ) advocates that claim the global perspective should be done away with altogether. However, based on our research, we believe that global perspectives can still serve EJ purposes. Thus, we propose a new framework, storyworld networking, for articulating global and spherical images of forests without reducing one to the other.
