ABSTRACT

this chapter, we review the empirical research we did on Global Forest Watch (GFW), which involved interviews with developers and power users of the platform to see to what extent they were able to generate viable storyworld networks using the program. Four themes emerged from our data, framing both problems and solutions: the problem of zoom, the wood wide web, the canopy problem, and maps as boundary objects. By analyzing these themes, we discover a series of ingenious solutions that local users have discovered to make GFW serve their environmental justice goals in spite of its participation in the Google Gaia paradigm. These solutions set us up to make recommendations to developers and users of similar platforms in the conclusion to this project.
