ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how manifestations of trauma in police custody – such as addiction, mental health symptoms, physical aggression, verbal abuse, difficulties processing speech, self-harm, and dissociation – may often be linked to undigested childhood trauma. This chapter provides a brief overview of interpersonal neurobiology, state-dependent functioning, polyvagal theory, and traumatic re-enactment, calling for comprehensive training for all police officers on these matters.
