ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how extremist groups design their own propaganda games and create user-generated content for existing videogames. It begins by briefly reviewing the use of videogames by jihadists before taking a deep dive into the production of bespoke games and mods by right-wing extremist actors. The chapter analyzes not only the content of propaganda games but explores in which areas of gaming culture the various strategies of the extreme right are applied. The chapter discusses, for example, modifications in which right-wing terrorist attacks can be re-enacted or the perspective of the Wehrmacht in National Socialism is depicted. The potential effects of bespoke games and modifications by which the extreme right networks, appeals to new people and spreads a misanthropic ideology, is addressed. Finally, the chapter makes an appeal for more decisive action against extremist games and modifications.
