ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an analysis of the extremist use of gaming (-adjacent) platforms – platforms that have been built to support the gamers in broader activity such as community building or the livestreaming of gaming. It provides an overview of right-wing extremist mobilization on two key gaming adjacent platforms – the game marketplace and community platform Steam and the chat and community-building platform Discord – exploring commonalities in extremist use of these platforms, with a focus on how their community-building functionality has allowed extremists to strengthen their networks, and radicalize individuals through the promotion of propaganda, and engagement in gamified extremist activity.
