ABSTRACT

While the potential nexus between gaming and extremism has received considerable attention over the last years and research is beginning to delineate how extremists seek to exploit gaming spaces, the voices of gamers themselves are often missing from these debates. This chapter focusses on the experiences of gaming communities with extremism and hate. To do so, it summarizes the results from two surveys the authors have conducted with members of gaming communities. The first survey was supported by the United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism and surveyed gamers regarding their positive and negative experiences in digital gaming spaces. The second survey has been conducted by the Anti-Defamation League every year since 2019 and focusses on gamers’ experiences and hate in online multiplayer games. The chapter closes by looking at some recent trends by tech companies to address hate and extremism on their platforms.
