ABSTRACT

The introductory chapter describes the book’s academic and political background, purpose, contribution, and outline in three parts and nine chapters. The focus on the challenges for news journalism is explained and related to three overarching processes: the far-right delegitimization of mainstream journalism; the performances and propagation of far-right populism in the news; and the normalization of far-right discourses in the news media. We define the categories of “the far right” and “authoritarian populism”, and, finally, we introduce the discourse analytical approach to the systematic inquiry into far-right strategies and the practices of news reporting.
