ABSTRACT
The interpretation of technological innovation has a long history but, invariably, the Industrial Revolution marks a key moment in its expansion and bearing upon labour. This chapter will trace the sway of innovation during this period upon physical and intellectual labour. It will be shown how developments during the Industrial Revolution prepared the way to current debates over labour, artificial intelligence, and, indeed, ecology.
