ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 explores the mega-trends of globalization, demography, migration, and climate change, and their profound impact on education, international development, and environmental sustainability. Globalization's impact has accelerated economic, cultural, and technological change, while influencing educational systems and employment worldwide. Demographic shifts, particularly those due to rapid urbanization and population growth, are detailed along with the strain put on resources and educational infrastructures in developing countries. It further examines internal and external migration driven by economic challenges, civil conflicts, and environmental factors, noting how migrants often face educational disparities and social marginalization in host communities. Climate change will inevitably exacerbate many of the challenges tied to trends in human development by displacing populations and increasing demands on limited resources. With respect to global pandemics, exemplified by COVID-19, there is increasing awareness of disruptive direct and indirect effects on education systems. Promoting a growth agenda for international development is clearly not sustainable—and never has been. This chapter asks how learning can play a role in addressing the multiple challenges of such emerging mega-trends. It concludes by affirming that what people know, how they think, and the ways they act will be central to effective development solutions.
