ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses how future generations are included in the ambitious political process connected to the UN's 2030 Agenda with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The chapter traces the global political process leading to the 2030 Agenda in 2015, the content of the 2030 Agenda, and the follow-up until the end of 2023. Moreover, it describes how the commitments in the 2030 Agenda create common frames of moral evaluations and problem-solving, which together with the monitoring of the member states’ achievements make the commitments morally binding. Nevertheless, these bindings are weak, and, despite varying degrees of action, all SDGs are seriously off-track. Finally, the chapter discusses how the mismatch between the global commitments to future generations in the 2030 Agenda and the nation states’ implementation has led to a series of calls for action in the UN system.
