ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the management of institutional complexities in governance networks. Such management involves strategies aimed at establishing or changing the institutional characteristics of governance networks. This chapter discusses how various types of institutional rules within networks can be established or reformulated to establish enhanced trust, facilitate collaboration, and ensure governance networks’ inclusivity. Furthermore, this chapter presents different approaches to institutional network management, such as regulatory imposition, negotiation, and storytelling. This chapter stresses that changing networks’ institutional features involves significant risks, as networks can be seen as social capital and the impacts of institutional strategies are uncertain. Furthermore, the consequences of network changes are hard to reverse. This chapter closes with a number of institutional design principles that can guide institutional network management strategies.
