ABSTRACT
This chapter contains an in-depth discussion of some of the most pertinent LGBTQ+ focused museologists including Janes and Sandell, Levin, Reilly, Sandell, Sullivan and Middleton and Tyburczy. It describes their findings and exposes the gaps in the literature partially filled by this research. It explores Levin’s edited collection which points out difficulties in establishing queer representation in museums and the over-reliance on temporary exhibitions; Sandell’s focus on activism and inclusivity discourse over a more radical or queer theoretical-based approach; Tyburczy’s ‘queer curatorship’ being limited to discussions about sex museums; Reilly’s focus on art galleries which ignore minoritarian subjects; and Middleton and Sullivan’s focus on creating a queer toolbox for practitioners. It also describes two works by Ferentinos and Vincent - both practitioners who delineate some current practise in the USA and UK, respectively.
