ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the ongoing queering project of the Van Abbemuseum, a modern and contemporary art museum in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. This case study focuses on the institutional changes that occur when the director pursues a decolonising, demodernising, queering framework that affects every part of the institution. It will look at both front-facing programming and internal processes that were affected by this radical change in approach to what a museum can and should be. Beyond the internal workings and collections presentation of the museum, this chapter will also look at the way it engages with its public. It will focus on the relationships between the museum and its various constituencies (specifically the LGBTQ+ community). Of particular note will be how engaged the museum is on a theoretical level of what queer means and how it can be used as a tool in knowledge formation.
