ABSTRACT

This chapter ends the book with a final consideration of what it means to queer the museum by placing it amongst the ideas of other queer museologists and discussing implications for future practice. It defines the queer utopic museum as one that engages in work with marginalised communities, that relies on in- and ex-ternal critiques of the museum, that seeks a broad understanding of queer/ing and that includes LGBTQ+ bodies and narratives into its representation. In terms of practice, it cites the importance of lasting and visible community work and the need for a queer political perspective in all aspects of museum work. It also describes how a re-inscription of knowledge can upset traditional hierarchies and binaries which characterise museum work and organisation.
